Mandala

This artwork was made freehand, using only my rake and my body as a measuring tool. It is thus a reflection of my own body proportions.

Lovingly crafted mini doc

Here is repost of a mini-doc on me made last year by KQED, a public station in the San Francisco area. They did such a great job :-) It apparently got 17 nominations for awards. There must have been some really stellar work that beat this one!

This mini documentary is perhaps my favorite of all the ones done. There is a spaciousness in the story telling that allows the viewing of the video to feel relaxing and meditative. It shows many aspects of what I am doing and the experience of doing it.

I was filmed recently for the program 'Full Frame' by CCTV. I love it!

Sometimes I listen to what I say when I am filmed and I feel a cringe inside. Perhaps its the editing that seems to reposition thoughts, or the video action doesn't quite seem to match what I am speaking about. Not so with this film. The clip takes its time with the material and interview, allowing the events to unfold spaciously. I'm even happy with the piece I did that day (not always the case!).

Playa Painting Aerial Zoom- 'Shine'

This artwork was made for our boy, Kavi Vayu, who had not yet been born (he's one month old today!). We dedicated it to him as a message that could serve him throughout life. In it we depict a mandala within a circle. There are many other circles floating about, each of which, it is inferred contains its own mandala. The visible mandala is sending out rays of energy which touch and spread out amongst the other circles. It signifies how each of us is the mandala sending out our energy into the world, illuminating and affecting all those around us. The best we can do in this life is to be the powerful expression of whomever we are. This is a visual representation of that idea.

On CBS Evening News!

I was interviewed for CBS about a month ago and it just aired tonight. I am not so thrilled with the artwork I made. It was the first time trying the design and many things came to me as I was doing it and then as I was able to look from above. Many changes I would make. I have to be easier on myself for having still-in-development art being filmed. Its hard to receive attention of praise for something I don't feel as complete with. And this I would consider one of those moments. However, I appreciated how they approached and edited the piece and the interview.

Awesome Video of 'Mussells II'

This awesome video was made by my friends at Element C. It has a very cool use of what is possible then using high resolution photos for the timelapse. I am looking forward to a larger collaboration with this crew.

Delightful advert for Barefoot Wines

This artwork was commissioned by Barefoot Wines to announce their newest flavor. The video they produced is so playful and fun! A far cry from the tendency towards seriousness that my art can have. The tide, which at first seemed to be out to wreck the day, in the end added a constant element of change and then came on cue to erase the entire piece in dramatic fashion for the camera.

Here is an artist profile done by Ovation TV, sponsored by Subaru. Its the best quality film of my and my work yet done. While I don't care for the commercialism, I'm super psyched about what the film crew created.

'Mesh' at Allomere Falls Video Flyover

Here is a brief flyover of the piece done at the awesome Allomere Falls in southern Point Reyes Park where the waterfall is spilling out onto the beach- epic! I had attempted to do a fly-in from the ocean but turned out I wasn't recording(!) That would have been awesome. But there's this for now...

'Kelp' at Stinson Playa Painting Timelapse

These paintings were done as a profile of me for Ovation TV. The top one is the actual day of filming. The other two are the previous two days of practice. The day of the filming was a glorious one. I will post the final product as soon as it is available for the public.

The big day. And it did feel like a big one- it was an actual film crew from L.A.- definitely the most serious film project I've been involved with.

Mandala group art creation

This is a timelapse of the making of a henna-inspired mandala by a group of family members who commissioned me to direct the creation of a marriage proposal. Everything about this day was stellar. And the group worked amazingly well together as the video shows.

On Korean TV

I was recently featured on a Korean variety show. It was a unique shoot in which they had me acting ireenactments. I was filmed for several days, in total making 5 paintings. Wacky show- it was a fun time!

Last year I was flown to the Island of Jersey to participate in an international beach art exposition. It was filmed by the BBC. The film recently came out and here it is!

Timelapse video of 'Trail'

This video was done for me by my friends at Videology. I'm a perfectionist, and this one didn't quite hit all the bells for me. The sun wasn't in the best position for good contrast (being early morning) and I would tweak the process I used a bit to create a slightly different image. The film style is cool and its fun to see the progression and work involved.  

World Beach Art Festival

 

I took part in the Island of Jersey's World Beach Art festival (lies between England and France). There were 3 other artists. We each chose a beach from the many fine ones on the island. I 'won' my beach in a coin toss. I was psyched. The location gave me something that would give life to the designs I had been working on.

Discovery Channel

I just got filmed by the Canadian Discovery Channel!

In preparing for it, I wanted to do something that was science-y to go along with the program filming me. I was looking towards a geometric oriented design comprised of organic shapes. Going through tons of design concepts, looking through my books of inspiration, I found my self returning to the artwork of Ernst Haeckel and his drawings of aquatic plant life. The ultimate idea was of a kelp forest/coral reef feeling.

Developing the resulting drawing got me moving in new directions with the art, which is really exciting. I can see that there is lots more to develop, that aspects of this drawing could use refinement. And yet the elements of something really awesome are there.

Its tough to go for new terrain, especially when being documented. While I would like to have another go at this design, ultimately I'm happy with the result.

They filmed me leaving my house and driving down the street and then interviewed me afterwards. It is set to aire in September and I'll post it!
