'Substructures' - Public Demonstration Artwork

I'm pulling this up from the archives...
---------------------------------------------------

It's been a while since I last did a public art-making in San Francisco and wow- what a great day to do it. A huge crowd gathered to watch the process on a gorgeous, sunny afternoon. My buddy Jonathan Clark made a film of the event that is really well done!

[Update: this was the first collaboration between Jonathan and I and since then we've traveled to several countries and made many more videos and tons of amazing photos.]

Meditational Group Artwork

The Meditational Group Artwork is the more intentional, reverential, focused side of my group large-scale art-making. It is a walking meditation, an opportunity to simultaneously focus and release our thoughts, feelings, and desires as we create an artwork together.

Check the 'Upcoming Events' listing on the upper right side of my site to see the scheduled events.

---------------------

I had been wanting to create an offering that allowed others to create with me in an intentional, ceremonial way. One day I did an artwork, dedicating it to a friend whose son was ill. The next day I did another, this time I put it out on my Facebook page, inviting those interested to send their prayers for me to place in the artwork. There was a huge response, from people calling things into their lives to prayers for those experiencing turmoil. The whole thing felt good- the invitation to participate, the act of doing the artwork, sharing the final image. The experience inspired me to open it up for others to join me. Thus was born the Prayer Artwork. The gathering has evolved to focus on the meditational aspects of the- the part that allows the mind to let go. I still use it as an opportunity to project intentional thoughts and intentions.

This gathering is a meditation in motion as we create a mandala together. We start with body and heart opening activities followed by space for sharing our intentions (if any). Next I'll give a bit of instruction with technique and guidance in what we'll be doing and then we silently create an artwork together.

I hope you can join us, its a magical experience to intentionally create- even more magical to be inside the design creating it!

Note: Physical condition notice- moderate physical capacity needed for raking as well as getting to the from the beach location.

Workshop 1: Playa Paintings 101

Playa Paintings 101 is the intro class that looks at the development and evolution of my artwork, goes into technique, then gives participants a chance to create a large-scale artwork together.

Check the 'Upcoming Events' listing on the upper right side of my site to see the scheduled events.

----------------------------------

Have you looked at my imagery and wondered what the designs are about, where they come from, what they are based upon? Curious about crop circles, sacred geometry, chaos and fractals and how those fit into my art? Or what they mean to you? Have a desire to doodle in the sand with one of my rakes and play with design potentials?

Great- then you'll love the workshop I have planned!

As time allows, we will go into the following areas:
  • crop circles- why are they so compelling?
  • the origins of geometry and its impact on spirituality and humanity, the effects of which are felt throughout our culture
  • fractals- the language of nature, the algorithms of reality
  • chaos- is the universe truly chaotic?
  • the development of my art through these various lenses and how they inform the latest designs
And here's the general flow for the gathering:
  • A talk as described above
  • demonstrations of my process, from the geometrical designs to the organic ones
  • then we'll play with the rakes and do some practical group exercises
  • finally I'll present the design options for that day and together work on possible variations- have a hand in designing the image we will later create
  • Time to get to work and make our group art piece!
I hope you can join us, its a magical experience to see the process unfold- even more magical to be inside the design creating it!

Note: Physical condition notice- moderate physical capacity needed for raking as well as getting to the from the beach location.

Workshop 3: Spontaneous Creation

Spontaneous Creations is the freeform art class designed to liberate us from preconception and form. After intro activities we'll create a large-scale artwork together.

Check the 'Upcoming Events' listing on the upper right side of my site to see the scheduled events.

The beach is an amazing canvas for creative expression. And the rake is a tool that uses the whole body. Its a perfect combination for spontaneous, body-centered, free form exploration.

Here's the general flow of the gathering:
  • Start with some Chi-Gong style breathing and movement activities and a brief meditation
  • We'll jump right in with different activities to get us connected to the tool and the medium
  • Do a series of activities that get us connected to intuitive creation
  • Talk about and then work on a group artwork
  • Take some aerial group photos of our creation!
I hope you can join us. Its a magical to experience the creative flow moving through your body while being barefoot on the beach.

Note: Physical condition notice- moderate physical capacity needed for raking as well as getting to the from the beach location.

The Art of Being: Nature and Transformative Art-making [Dec 6, San Franisco]

The Art of Being Human: Portals

The Art of Being Human outings are a series of intentional group art-making, each focusing on and exploring a different and pertinent aspect of human embodiment based on what is juicy in the collective. These are explorations in the fundamental beauty and tension of spirit in form that is the human experience, using the vehicle of creative expression via Andres's magical beach art and collaboration with the Earth and each other, with facilitation from Lawrence Kampf and Andres Amador.
'Portal' 2007, Stinson Beach, CA

The theme for this next outing: "Portals"

We'll explore individual and collective experience of Portals. What is coming through you? What are you moving through? From where are you exiting and to where are you entering? The artwork we make will reflect this theme.

Where: Daly City, CA

Children at Art Events Notice

Children of any age are absolutely welcome to participate and up to age 15 I offer a 1/2 off discount if they are full participants (meaning they get dedicated use of the limited tools).

Here are my thoughts when considering bringing your child:
  • Depending on the workshop there is a lecture and instruction portion- will your child be interested in this part?
  • My request to all participants is that they stick to the work we are all doing so that we can create a unified artwork. Those who wish to go their own direction I politely direct to other parts of the beach
  • I would like you, the parent or guardian, to be able to be present to the activity. Does your child have a natural curiosity about the subject matter?
The gatherings are about 3 hours long, which can be a lot for young folk. The beach is a perfect place for kids to have fun. Perhaps another adult can be present to supervise so you can fully participate in the gathering if your child feels a waning attention.

Note: In registering, purchase 2 full price tickets and I will refund the difference after the event.
